Queenz of Piano makes classical concerts fun

In 2015, the piano queen won the German award "Thüringer Kleinkunstpreis" for her "musical and acrobatic unique works of art", which shows that it is possible to have a lot of fun in classical concerts while crossing the boundaries between classical and acrobatics. Pop music is played on two grand pianos.

Now, as part of the 21st Antalya International Piano Festival, they are preparing to meet the audience in Antalya tomorrow.

The band is composed of Jennifer Rüth and Ming, playing classical music, pop music, rock and film soundtracks in a hot, silent, fashionable, charming and particularly magical way. Using their grand piano as a percussion instrument to pluck the strings, they create sounds that remind us of washboards, guitars, zithers, bouzoukis, bongo drums or Japanese zithers.

Piano Queen’s new show shows how beautiful imperfection is. Artists played different instruments and set off a revolution in the music industry. You can listen to the harmonious tune between Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" and Pharrell Williams' "Happiness". They showed how Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" sounds, if Kurt Cobain is a friend of Johann Sebastian Bach, and what cool influence Ragtime had on Mozart's "Turkish March".

For those who like music and humor, this is a wonderful performance. Their music is not only suitable for classical music lovers, but also for modern pop music lovers. Before tomorrow's performance, the band answered some questions.

People like that the song you explained is the same as the original. What makes you different from other musicians?

We believe that classical music is as shocking as pop music. Johann Sebastian Bach has as much movement and rhythm energy as AC/DC's "Thunderstruck". In our program, we combine the exquisiteness and depth of classical music with the atmosphere of popular concerts, breaking the boundaries between Bach and beats on two grand pianos. Composing your own music is also part of our musical language. Therefore, it is natural to incorporate original songs into our programs. We have integrated innovative ways of playing the piano, such as plucking and pulling strings, in order to obtain creative sounds from the piano and imitate instruments such as drums and guitars.

What genres and songs do you think reflect your musical identity? How do you choose the song you want to interpret?

The songs we chose are very different. Sometimes we hear a song on the radio, and if we all like it, we will arrange for two pianos. Sometimes we are looking for classical music that has the same harmony structure as popular songs, so it can be easily combined. We also listen to pop music and dance like ordinary teenagers. I (Jenny) learn jazz singing and play in a jazz band. Ming plays an electric guitar in a punk band. In our program, we combine these different music genres, this is our identity.

Classical music has strict rules. What kind of reaction do you get from classical musicians?

Fortunately, there have been only positive reactions so far, also from strict classical musicians. Or they just didn't tell us.

What does the word "perfect" mean to you?

Nothing but nothing at the same time. As classically trained pianists, we are educated and can perform perfectly without any mistakes. Therefore, we often practice and rehearse. But our experience is that if something spontaneous, not "perfect" or planned situation happens on the stage, this will have the opportunity to create special and very interesting moments with the audience, especially when they see us here. Struggling in this situation and trying to make the best. This is why concerts are sometimes imperfect but unique.

Are there any difficulties in maintaining your musical life as a group? Do you have any interesting moments playing together on stage?

Of course, I think COVID is a challenge for every music group. Usually we hold about 70 concerts every year. In the past two years, we really missed playing together on stage regularly and spending time together on tour. We like to travel to different countries together. This is why the Antalya festival will end in 2021 as a highlight. How lucky!

What is the melody of Turkish music? Are you familiar with Turkish music?

A few years ago, Tarkan's song "Şıkıdım" was very popular in Germany. We like this song. In our concert, we also played lullabies from all over the world. Of course, in Antalya, we will play a famous Turkish lullaby.

Do you have a new version? Or are there any upcoming projects?

We are always creating new tracks and arranging them. We are currently working on a Christmas program, and we are also planning to release a new CD with a Christmas song.

Can you tell us more details about your Antalya concert? What will happen to your repertoire?

In addition to the arrangement of popular songs like Ed Sheeran's "Shape of you", we also combine different music genres, mainly between classical music and popular music. You can listen to the harmonious tune between Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" and Pharrell Williams' "Happiness". We showed how Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" sounds, if Kurt Cobain is a good friend of Johann Sebastian Bach, and how the influence of Ragtime will have a cool influence on Mozart's "Turkish March". We also sang at the concert and had a lot of interaction with the audience. We just like to impress people with music.
