BERKELEY — Two men were struck and killed early Sunday on Interstate 80 after they were involved in a car crash and got out of their vehicles to argue, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers got word of an argument between two drivers at 1:36 a.m. Sunday on the eastbound lanes of I-80 west of University Avenue. A minute later, police received multiple calls of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers found a Chevrolet Malibu, a Dodge Durango and a Mini Cooper damaged and blocking two lanes of traffic, as well as two unresponsive men lying on the roadway ahead of the collision scene.

Police said the Chevrolet and the Dodge had initially been involved in a crash with no injuries. Two men and one woman got out of the vehicles and stood in the traffic lanes while arguing about the collision.

A Mini Cooper tried to swerve past the stopped vehicles and struck the two men, killing them. The woman was possibly struck by debris; she was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, a 50-year-old San Francisco man, remained on the scene and was cooperative with police.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision, the CHP said. The identities of the two men who died have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
